Opera at Court Garden

The renowned local opera singer Neil Jenkins recognised the acoustic qualities of the barn and held a memorable concert here, but it was another 5 years before Operas were performed.

The first Opera performed in the Barn was Bizet’s Dr Miracle, brought to us by Pop-up Opera in March 2014, they returned in June and again in October with Mozart’s Così fan Tutte. Our audience moved from being curious to enthusiastic.

Over the next 4 years, Pop-up brought another 8 Operas to Court Garden bringing the total number of performances to 23.

Not only has this brought delight to a local audience who enjoy the intimate and informal atmosphere of the barn, but also the opportunity for young musical talent to gain experience and perhaps climb the first few rungs on the ladder of their musical careers.

    The audience has enjoyed:
  • Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Harem)
  • Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri
  • Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi (The Capulets and Montagues)
  • Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville)
  • Cimarosa’s Il Matrimonio Segreto (The Secret Marriage)
  • Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel
  • And finally the last Pop-up show of Bizet’s Carmen in November 2018

After Pop-up decided not to continue touring, we needed to cast our net wider in 2019.

We were really fortunate to get Vivien Conacher and Natasha Day on board. They brought us two brilliant Galas each of which they performed twice. The first The Conquests of Love had been written by Natasha and followed two young couples on their journey through temptation, friendship, love and mistaken identity, of course a wonderful excuse to enjoy some familiar arias, much enjoyed by our audience in May and June. The second themed Gala was performed in September: Sparkle and Song was written by Vivien especially for Court Garden and weaves a story about a dinner party given by the Duchess her Major General husband, aided by the butler and maid to set the scene for many operetta gems from the late-19th and early-20th century.

Natasha sang with Devon Opera bringing their lovely take on Così fan Tutte to Court Garden in July.

The last performance in the Barn was a Magical Evening in November. Pippa Dames-Longworth brought her Singing Salon to entertain us with an eclectic mix of Arias. Despite the foulest of weather the audience was entranced and went home happy.
